Introducing Shockwave Regenerative Treatment

Also known as radial shockwave therapy or extracorporeal shockwave therapy is a strong but painless way to treat sports injuries and other lingering injuries. This ultrasound therapy is an effective and noninvasive way to treat painful conditions of your muscles, bones, nerves and musculoskeletal connective tissue.

Shockwave regenerative therapy is a form of orthopedic and sports rehabilitative treatment for both injury and chronic pain, although its name isn’t quite as fierce as it sounds. The treatment consists of soundwave pulses delivered via external — or extracorporeal — handheld tools. Thanks to decades of success and proven safety, is becoming a standard procedure that speeds healing.

How Shockwave Therapy Works

Radial shockwave therapy uses a form of focused sound energy that encourages regenerative healing in your muscles, bones and connective tissue, including ligaments and tendons. Delivered by your doctor, chiropractor at ReBalance, the procedure sends a focused, percussive sound wave deep into the site of your injury, pain or chronic tightness. It requires no anesthesia because it isn’t painful.

Your physician or therapist applies a coating of water-soluble gel on your skin where you’re feeling the pain. The gel better transmits the soundwaves beneath your skin. The handheld device then creates thousands of tiny sonic pressure pulses that generate micro-ruptures deep within your capillaries. These ruptures hyper-stimulate or excite new cell growth at the site, causing a rapid body response to heal. As a result, the procedure encourages rapid repair, increased blood supply and oxygenation that carries away the inflamed tissue.

Pain Relief from Radial Shockwave Therapy

Your physician or pain therapist may prescribe a plan consisting of three to five treatments. Pain relief from ultrasound therapy is quick, if not immediate. The anesthetic effect of the shockwave pulses act on your pain. The healing process itself usually begins within a couple sessions and can continue for several weeks and months afterward.

Current research shows radial shockwave therapy to be effective at least 80 percent of the time. During the course of treatment, you may experience mild and short-lived tingling, redness or bruising at the site of the therapy. These side effects have become rarer, thanks to the continued development of the shockwave technology.

Areas Treated by Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave regenerative treatment is used for a broad range of musculoskeletal issues, especially for shoulder pain, knee pain, elbow pain, back pain and hip pain. The conditions treated include:

  • Stress fractures
  • Breaks
  • Runners knee
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Tennis elbow
  • Tendonitis
  • Bursitis
  • Arthritis
  • Chronic muscle tightness
  • Inflammation of muscles, ligaments or tendons

It is also a common form of treatment for painful issues in your feet, such as:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Heal spurs
  • Bunions
  • Strains
  • Fractures

Nerve pain is another area where radial shockwave treatment can help. It can improve your:

  • Radial pain
  • Pinched nerves
  • Shooting pain
  • Headaches
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain

Shockwave therapy has proven its worth through clinical trials and is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It’s used for reducing adhesions where scar tissue has formed and for areas of calcification in your bone.

Efficacy for Pain Relief

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy  has been used as an effective treatment for a variety of pain conditions for over 20 years. There have been many studies proving that is more effective than other therapies for healing tendons and ligaments.

  • Shoulder tendonitis is caused by inflammation in the muscles and tendons that connect the arm bone to the shoulder. It is caused by injury, or simply, wear and tear from repetitive motion. Shoulder tendonitis causes dull to severe pain. For shoulder tendonitis reduced pain in 85% of cases and is a safer and less painful substitute for surgery.
  • Frozen shoulder is pain and stiffness in the shoulder joint. It usually occurs after an injury, which prevents you from moving your shoulder. In a study of 30 patients with frozen shoulder, 15 received and 15 received a placebo treatment. The first group reported a significant decrease in pain and improvement of frozen shoulder symptoms.
  • Tennis elbow is the inflammation of the tendons that connect the lower arm to the elbow. This is caused by tiny tears in the muscles and tendons of the elbow. Therapy has a 70% efficacy for tennis elbow. Unlike painkillers, which you need to take daily, therapy only requires 5 treatments to experience pain relief for tennis elbow.
  • Hip tendonitis is an inflammation in the hip tendon caused by repetitive use. Hip tendonitis occurs from abnormal stress on the hip. In 79% of patients, extracorporeal shockwave therapy reduced pain and inflammation.
  • Osteitis pubis is the inflammation of the public joint and the surrounding muscles. It occurs after pelvic surgery or in athletes. Procedure reduced pain and allowed athletes to get back to the sport in 3 months.
  • Achilles tendonitis is an injury to the tendon connecting the calf to the heel. This is considered a safe treatment for Achilles tendonitis, however, there is not enough research to prove the exact efficacy for this injury.
  • Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the muscle that connects the toes to the heel. With extracorporeal shockwave therapy the risk of surgery is eliminated. Shockwave promotes healing and pain relief of plantar fasciitis.

Shockwave treatment has been effective in restoring blood flow for other conditions, including erectile dysfunction. A year after treatment  for tendon injury patients reported a 92% decrease in pain.

Using Shockwave Therapy for Your Pain

Make an appointment at ReBalance to ask if using shockwave therapy for your work, sports injury or pain is appropriate. While it can ease your pain and speed your healing, radial shockwave therapy is not advised for some people or conditions, such as:

  • Young patients where growth plates are still open and forming
  • Areas where tumors are present
  • Areas where infection is present
  • Disorders of the nerves or circulation
  • Metabolic bone disorders

Living with Chronic Back Pain

Back pain is one of the most common ailments in men. When you suffer from chronic pain, your symptoms may range in severity and frequency. The worse your symptoms, the more important it is that you seek medical attention. Heal or prevent symptoms, such as:

  • Stabbing pains
  • Pinched nerves
  • Stinging sensations
  • Burning feeling
  • Numbness or tingling in your extremities
  • Muscle spasms
  • Muscle tightness that limits your movement
  • Prolonged pain after sitting or standing
  • Difficulty standing up, sitting or walking without pain

Don’t wait until your chronic back pain is bad enough to cause nausea and appetite loss. When you have to stretch for 20 minutes in the morning just to get through your day, it’s time to act. Join ReBalance 360 for effective treatment for back pain, especially chronic lower back pain.

Causes of Chronic Back Pain

Back pain in men originates in countless ways, from sports injuries to picking up a box the wrong way. You can hurt your spine, damage a vertebral disc or pull a muscle. Other causes of back pain include:

  • Arthritis
  • Kidney stones, sometimes confused with chronic lower back pain
  • Fibromyalgia, a painful condition that may result from fatigue
  • Poor posture
  • Repetitive motions
  • Sitting for prolonged periods of time
