Eugene de Kock, (L) an apartheid-era assassin nicknamed Prime Evil, appears at the Truth And Reconci..By Mfuneko Toyana PRETORIA (Reuters) - South Africa delayed a politically sensitive decision on whether to grant parole to apartheid death-squad leader Eugene de Kock, dubbed 'Prime Evil' for torturing and murdering black activists in the 1980s and early 1990s. Justice Minister Michael Masutha told reporters on Thursday de Kock had "made progress" towards rehabilitation after 20 years behind bars but said the families of his victims had not been properly consulted. De Kock lawyer Julian Knight dismissed the delay as "political interference" and said he would challenge Masutha's interpretation of the law on consulting victims' families in parole matters. "We're not going to roll over and play dead." De Kock himself was "disappointed", he added.

Russia on Thursday condemned a European Union plan to extend the list of persons, including Russians, targeted with asset freezes and travel bans over the Ukraine crisis as an unfriendly move that would hinder ties with the 28-nation bloc. "Our attitude to the sanctions lists has not changed," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich told a news conference. "This is an unfriendly act which cannot but reflect on the overall state of our relationship with the EU." "We are absolutely convinced that this is no method for cooperation between countries, between such major players as Russia and the European Union." The diplomat in Brussels said after a meeting of EU ambassadors that addressed the issue that the list consisted mainly of Ukrainian separatists but may include "one or two Russians there as well".

MOSCOW/PARIS (Reuters) - The leaders of France and Germany backed Russia by calling for a new ceasefire in eastern Ukraine on Thursday but told President Vladimir Putin to prevent separatist fighters and arms crossing the border into Ukraine. French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel told Putin it was important to reach a political solution quickly in the three-month-old conflict between government forces and separatists in the country's east. Moscow denies accusations by Ukraine and Western governments that it has been fuelling the conflict by allowing fighters and weaponry to move freely into eastern Ukraine from Russia.
