I hate to say it, but school will be open soon. However, I hope that you have been shopping Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue - Our Everything Avenue - for back-to-school bargains, in spite of the painting of our Jamaica Avenue El, (Which the GWDC advocated for over 25 years, and doesn’t it look great?)

Yes, this weekend continue to shop your award-winning Woodhaven Business Improvement District from Dexter Court to 100th Street on Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue, where you can buy your school supplies, shirts, slacks, blouses, dresses, shoes, bags and everything to make your children happy to return to school.

All of these purchases will be the envy of their fellow schoolmates, all at bargain prices. We have great purchases available with great savings on Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue!

Especially on Saturday, August 25, when your WBID will sponsor “Back to School” Sales Days with live music, face painters, and free giveaways, including American flags, all along our Woodhaven’s Jamaica Avenue. All courtesy of your store and business owners that care enough to contribute to the WBID and make these activities possible.

So remember, Saturday, August 25, from 1 to 4 p.m. shop while you enjoy the music, the clowns, and free face painting. So shop and then relax by eating out or ordering in at the many restaurants with good food, great sales, fun events and extra Woodhaven Business Improvement District Security. Only in Woodhaven! Where the prices are right, the streets are clean and you can enjoy shopping and dining in a safe, warm atmosphere.

Very important: mark your calendar for these dates as well:

• Remember Kool and the Gang? Well, they will be appearing at Resorts World on Friday, August 10, at 8 p.m.

• There will be an exam for Tracking Dog Handler on Friday, August 24, at 10 a.m. For information, please go to www.dec.ny.gov/about/50230.html. There will also be employment opportunities at the U.S Open. Register online at www.amerivents.com.

• Vote on Primary Day, Thursday, September 13, for the Republican and the

Democrat candidates that will run in the November Election. Election Day is Tuesday, November 6.

• The Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation-sponsored “Wonderful Woodhaven Street Festival” on October 14, with new hours being noon to 6 p.m.

Three years ago at this time, we were asking you to email and write letters to our New York Secretary of State regarding the reinstatement of the Cease and Desist Order protecting Woodhaven residents from unwanted real estate solicitations. Well, it was reinstated! So, please fill out a form today. You can have one mailed to you by calling the Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation at (718) 805-0202 or registering electronically by going to the website at http:/www.dos.state.ny.us/lcns/cdform.asp.

The Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation has low-interest home improvement loans available at 2 1/2 and 5 percent interest rates. Please call our office at (718) 805-0202 to find out if you qualify.

Last year our J Line elevated train was named the best train in New York City. This year it still has an excellent rating, but now is in second place with the 7 train now number one.

Sadly, during this past week there was a deadly shooting at a Sikh Temple in Wisconsin. In this shooting, six innocent religious people lost their lives. Thankfully, the police (two who were badly injured) saved lives by responding and killing the suspect. Our deepest condolences and prayers go out to our Sikh friends and neighbors in this, their time of grief.

Fly our American flag above all others and replace it often. May God bless our leaders, may God bless our armed forces and disabled veterans, and may God bless our America.
