ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Suspected Islamic militants have struck for a fourth time in three days in Nigeria, killing 20 people including a traditional ruler in attacks in the northeast, local government and security officials said Wednesday.
Slavyansk (Ukraine) (AFP) - An operation by Ukrainian forces to reassert control over its eastern regions floundered Wednesday in the face of pro-Russian resistance, a day ahead of international talks on the escalating crisis. A concerned NATO said it planned to deploy more forces in eastern Europe and called for Russia to stop "destabilising" the former Soviet satellite, which has been in deep turmoil since the ouster of the pro-Kremlin leadership in February. Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that Kiev's decision to send in troops this week to put down a separatist uprising in its industrial heartland had dragged the country to the brink of civil war. In a sign that its plan was backfiring, Ukraine's defence ministry said Moscow-backed militants blocked and seized six armoured vehicles that had been deployed Tuesday in a bid to oust the separatists.
Signaling a tougher stance toward legal claims stemming from its recent recall over faulty ignition switches, General Motors Co said it will ask a U.S. court to bar lawsuits related to actions before its 2009 bankruptcy. GM has previously said it is protected from liability for claims related to incidents that occurred before it exited bankruptcy in 2009. But it has now taken its first steps to raise those issues with the court by filing motions to stay recall-related lawsuits while it asks that bankruptcy court to clarify the extent of that protection. In a filing with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas on Tuesday, GM asked for a stay on litigation related to ignition claims until a judicial panel on multidistrict litigation decides on a motion to consolidate the case with other lawsuits and the bankruptcy court rules on whether the claims violate GM's 2009 bankruptcy sale order.
