Neir’s Tavern in Woodhaven is hosting their second annual golf benefit on Thursday, May 17 at Forest Park, and this time around the local watering hole is raising money for individuals and families who are affected by autism.

Called the Neir’s NYFAC golf benefit, proceeds from the event will go toward the local organization, New York Families for Autistic Children (NYFAC) in Ozone Park.

“We’ve always been local and we’re always going to be local,” said Loy Gordon, one of Neir’s co-owners and an organizer of the event. “And it’s important that we pair up with an organization that’s also local.”

Like NYFAC, Gordon notes that Neir’s is also a small neighborhood establishment trying to grow and he feels it’s important to partner up in this way.

“We love the fact that a group of people are willing to give their time and money to our kids,” said Mitch Udowitch, a spokesperson for NYFAC. “We love them.”

This is the second golf fundraiser that the bar has hosted. Last year, the bar raised money for those battling cancer.

The fundraiser is focusing on autism this year because it is something that the bar’s customers are talking about.

“Since I’ve been here it’s been a passion of mine to find a cause that’s important to local customers and help with that,” he said.

Last year, one customer was battling cancer, and another’s 10-year-old son was also suffering from cancer. It was those stories that spawned the 2011 golf fundraiser and a separate fundraising event in 2010.

“We’re always trying to do something inspired by our customers,” Gordon said.

In over two years of fundraising, the bar has managed to raise $15,000. That amount includes the large events like the golf benefit, as well as smaller ones, such as a recent event held to support the Woodhaven-Richmond Hill Ambulance Corps.

The owners of the bar are expecting a bigger turnout for the benefit this year. Already between 80 and 100 golfers are expected to attend.

“If you’re a golfer, it’s a great day to enjoy time out at a local golf course,” Gordon said. “And if you’re not, you can still come by and support by buying a Tee-Sign for example.”

The Tee-Sign will be “prominently placed” at the tee-off or on the greens. Supporters can also purchase signs for golf carts and a hole-in-one competition, a show of support which Gordon says can be a great way to promote local businesses.

For those who want to skip golf, the bar will be hosting a BBQ awards dinner party from 4 to 7 p.m. with a full open bar, indoor buffet, a BBQ pig roast and over $2,500 in raffle prizes donated by restaurants, banks and local businesses.

“We just really enjoy supporting the community because the community has been supportive of us over the years,” said Neir’s manager Chris Piccione.

The event will be held at the Forest Park Golf Course, located at 101 Forest Park Drive in Woodhaven. Registration for the event begins at 10 a.m.

The awards dinner party will be held at Neir’s Tavern, located at 87-48 78th Street.
