As you all know by now, Maria Thomson passed away earlier this year. It seems like yesterday that she was writing the weekly article for the Leader-Observer.

As her successor, I was asked to write a monthly column about the happenings in Woodhaven. I hope that I can, as Maria did, write from the heart about her beloved community of Woodhaven, “A Haven in the City” as she always referred to it.

As a resident of Woodhaven for my entire life, I am familiar with the stores and businesses. It is not just through working at the Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation, but through buying a cup of coffee or a bite to eat or just a hello while walking on Jamaica Avenue.

On May 24, at 7:30 p.m., the Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation will hold the Annual Small Town Memorial Remembrance at Forest Parkway Plaza. Veterans will be asked to speak about their experiences, and a new wreath in the memory of all those lost during the wars will be placed in Forest Parkway Plaza. All are invited to attend.

The next event will be a dinner-dance in honor of my great former boss. At the event, we will share memories of Maria Thomson throughout her years at the office. She will be the only honoree at the event. We will also have a good time, as Maria would have wanted us to. She always loved to sing and dance.

It will take place at the Woodhaven Manor from 7 p.m. until midnight on June 1. Call the office at (718) 805-0202 for more information or to buy tickets. We will also feature a raffle for a one-of-a-kind “Woodhavenopoly” game from the 80’s.

A copy of this game was recently donated by the GWDC to the Woodhaven Cultural and Historical Society for its museum. It highlights many of the old mom-and-pop stores on each space. There are only three in existence that we know of, and just one will be raffled off that night to the lucky winner.

Good luck to all who buy a raffle ticket for their chance to own a piece of Woodhaven history.

We have a new store coming to Woodhaven, as Mama’s Empanadas is getting ready to open. The gates were up last week, and as I peered through the window I could see that they are making good progress.

Hopefully they will open soon, and the Woodhaven business district will have yet another good restaurant to tempt all of us in the Community.

And while I am on the topic of food, I hear Uber Eats is a great way to order in. One of the staff members here at the GWDC says her family uses it all the time. Order online and have your meal delivered from one of the great restaurants on Jamaica Avenue.

Until we meet again next month.
